PHA-Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator

For more than 60 years, the Portsmouth Housing Authority (PHA) has provided a critical safety net & launching pad for thousands of Portsmouth, NH families. Today, we provide housing for over 1,000 residents, which is nearly 5% of the population of the City, making us the largest housing authority per capita in New Hampshire. Our voucher program serves another 750 people in the region. Our property portfolio consists of both high-rise urban properties & two sprawling 10+ acre family properties. People from all walks of life call the PHA’s eleven neighborhoods home. We provide housing for the Portsmouth citizens who are most economically vulnerable, including the frail elderly, mentally & physically disabled and working poor. We have a diverse mix of people with deep and complex needs who rely on other social services. Hundreds of people who live in PHA’s 600 owned & managed properties have diagnosed mental illnesses & disabilities, making us, by default, a significant part of the mental health support system in the region. Over 85% of our residents at PHA are considered “Extremely Low-Income,” which means that they are living at less than 30% of the area median income. With approximately 200 children living in PHA neighborhoods, we are a key partner of the Portsmouth school system as well as the people & organizations providing services to very young children and their parents. Staying in close touch with the administrators, school leaders, coaches, counselors, & resource officers makes a difference for the children we serve.
