VYT Summer-DREAM Summer Camp Counselor

DREAM has proven itself to be a life changing experience for both mentors and mentees throughout Vermont. Our mission is to build communities of families and college students that empower children from affordable housing neighborhoods to recognize their options, make informed decisions, and achieve their dreams. This leads to our ultimate goal for the children; that through their participation with DREAM they will grow to develop the skills and resources needed for each of them to reach their full potential. According to the Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement “Children who are from low-income families and grow up in high-poverty neighborhoods face academic and life challenges above and beyond the challenges faced by children who are from low-income families who grow up in neighborhoods without a high concentration of poverty.” DREAM has been aware of this phenomenon for over a decade and our program has developed to address this. Our exclusive focus on children from low-income housing communities enables us to reach a population that is both underserved and at the highest risk for academic failure and future challenges. Key to our success is the unique toolkit of complimentary programs that we have created including weekly one-on-one and group mentoring sessions, group activities, and quarterly culminating experiences. Unique to our model we also offer on-site summer programming and a summer residential camp and winter adventure camp. At the heart of DREAM are the weekly gatherings of DREAM mentors and children on the college campuses and in the communities. Through these weekly meetings mentoring pairs are able to build upon their mutual bond and the entire group of mentors and kids can develop their group identity to improve upon their programming.

Member Duties : Summer Camp Counselors will provide an unforgettable residential camp experience for 100 children between the ages of 9 and 18 living in affordable housing communities across Vermont. Through daily activities such as swimming, hiking, gardening, nutrition education, environmental education, and more, counselors will guide campers in activities that build life skills, teamwork, and self-reliance. Counselors will also assist in providing campers with healthy meals in accordance with the Vermont Summer Food Program. In building the community at Camp DREAM, made up of counselors, staff, counselors-in-training, campers, and volunteers, Summer Camp Counselors work directly to achieve DREAM’s mission. Campers will recognize their own ability to achieve their dreams within a safe, supervised setting, and will return home to their communities with a renewed sense of belonging, commitment to DREAM, and to one another.
