Rhode Island Afterschool STEM Expansion VISTA

United Way of Rhode Island seeks an AmeriCorps VISTA to increase the number of high-quality STEM programs available across Rhode Island. High-quality out-of-school-time programs have been shown to increase student academic performance, behavioral improvements, and have been a factor in supporting regular school attendance. Additionally, United Way of Rhode Island believes that high-quality STEM programming provides more than engagement in science, technology, engineering, or math classroom work. It promotes a hands-on, active skill set which youth and young adults can use to explore the world. STEM-literate youth and young adults are able to use skills gained from exposure to science, technology, engineering and math, (e.g.,problem solving, critical thinking, and observation), and apply them to real world settings, thereby preparing them for an increasingly STEM-centric world. The STEM VISTA will work to build partnerships with STEM-related businesses, industry partners, higher education officials, and schools to increase coordination and improve the quality of out-of-school-time programs. The STEM VISTA will also help to coordinate professional development opportunities for out-of-school-time providers throughout Rhode Island to improve the quality of the workforce and ultimately the quality of STEM programming throughout the state. Finally, the STEM VISTA will act as a liaison among United Way staff to ensure the sustainability of STEM as a tactic across the organizations work with youth. This position is located in Providence, RI.
