Fond du Lac Tribe: Community Health and Resiliency VISTA

Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior is a tribal community in Cloquet, Minnesota. This project engages community members in identifying existing and untapped sources of local strengths for health promotion. We will organize community-based participatory research that builds upon the Fond du Lac members’ collective experiences and empirical evidence capitalizing on community strengths in an effort to address the social determinants of health in tribal communities. The project team, including the VISTA member, will work closely with a community advisory council to plan, implement, analyze, and interpret results from our planned research. The project’s outcome will identify existing community-level resources that have an immediate impact on local policies and practices that can facilitate reductions in suicide, drug (particularly opioid) abuse and overdose, and that promote healing related to adverse childhood experiences.
