UWCCR HEC Economic Wellness Project VISTA

Poverty has been directly linked as a social determinant of health. “In the United States, wealth equals health.” People living in the lowest poverty neighborhoods (where less than 10% of residents live in poverty) live on average six years longer than people living in the highest poverty neighborhoods (where 30% of more of residents live in poverty). This intersection between health and wealth is undeniable and has compelled HEC and its partners to look at financial stability needs of residents living in the impacted community. The Economic Well-Being Project addresses three key components of financial well-being and security, including: 1) availability and access to fair financial services, 2) financial literacy and education for low-income residents, and 3) preparing for a stable financial future. Specific goals of the Economic Well-being Project are to: 1. Expand and build partnerships with the banking and financial industry to increase resident access to financial industry education, fair financial products and loans, and resources to increase their financial literacy and promote individual asset development. 2. Establish an HEC Economic Well-being Workgroup, including banking industry partners, HEAL program partners, residents, businesses and leaders, and work collaboratively to develop a “Blueprint for Prosperity” or strategic action plan to improve financial stability and security of residents living in Sacramento. 3. Expand financial resources and support for HEC's programs to ensure ongoing sustainability of the public health and safety interventions that have been implemented within HEC's existing programs and address financial security for community residents. 4. Identify resources and partnerships necessary to pilot a College Savings (C.S.A.) program in at least one elementary school located in the following Sacramento School Districts: Twin Rivers Unified School District/Sacramento City Unified School District/Elk Grove Unified District.
