The Ann Arbor YMCA’s Youth Volunteer Corps is a youth driven organization dedicated to serving the needs of the community, providing opportunities for youth to engage in meaningful service learning activities, promoting among young people and residents a greater understanding and appreciation for the diversity of their community, and promoting a lifelong ethic of volunteerism and commitment to social justice. Expanding Horizons, YVC’s intensive summer program, provides week-long blocks of service learning projects throughout Washtenaw County and the surrounding area for teens aged 11-17. Expanding Horizons reinforces teamwork skills, appreciation for diversity, and civic responsibility. Teens travel together on foot or via public transportation or chartered bus to pre-arranged projects. Depending on the project and agency involved, participants can spend anywhere from a few hours to a full week completing the service. Examples of agencies that YVC has served in the past include The Oaks, Natural Area Preserve, SOS Community Services, Hands on Museum and many more. This summer, some projects may take place in Detroit. Under the supervision of YVC adult team leaders, the participants learn beforehand about the mission of each individual agency they are to serve. The staff and teens discuss the goals of each project and establish work guidelines prior to project site arrival. Each session is concluded with a reflection process, facilitated by a YMCA YVC Team Leader, who engage participants in meaningful group discussion and active appreciation. The YVC summer program runs Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
