Citizen Schools - STEM External Engagement VISTA NY/NJ

Our Expanded Learning Time Program – Citizen Schools’ “second shift” of staff, AmeriCorps members, and volunteers expand the learning day by 30% or more for every student, offering: 1) Apprenticeships: Community volunteers called “Citizen Teachers” team with Citizen Schools’ staff and AmeriCorps members to lead students through weekly hands-on sessions that introduce new fields from solar energy to marketing to law, helping students see how academic and 21st century skills apply in the real world.2) Academic Support: Through dedicated homework time (AIM) and daily math or literacy lessons aligned with state and Common Core standards (Academic League), Citizen Schools offers more time to practice essential academic skills and more personalized assistance in meeting and exceeding proficiency standards. 3) Deep Partnerships: Citizen Schools’ staff collaborate with teachers and school leaders throughout the year to build a common vision, coordinate operations, align staff development, and share data about student progress in order to target instruction. They also engage families as partners, including through biweekly phone calls to each child’s parents or guardians. Our innovative model helps to bridge the opportunity gap between low-income and upper-income students by providing additional hours of academic enrichment and hands on learning with caring adults. Citizen Schools’ unique model for engaging STEM volunteers in weekly afternoon “apprenticeships” has been widely recognized as a promising approach to increasing student interest and skills in STEM – and galvanizing students’ interest in future STEM careers, the fastest growing segment of the US economy.
