WSU VISTA – Stafford County – Community Relations VISTA
 
 
 
Stafford County Economic Development strives to achieve local economic growth by fostering employment opportunities, improving housing, and cultivating amenities that improve quality of life that encourage population growth. VISTA members will assist in planning and coalition building efforts that encourage business development, expand cultural amenities, and guide public investment. Housing provided in a loft apartment for $250 month in St. John, where a brand new, $3.8 million, community-led grocery store / pharmacy/ fuel center/ deli and convenience store is opening October 2018. Other amenities in Stafford County include a community theater featuring new release movies, a dozen restaurants, two fitness facilities, an indoor pool available with membership, community festivals, three school districts, a 9 hole regulation-length public golf course that has green fees of $15 a day and $20 cart rental all day. Over 22,000 acres form Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, a migratory waterfowl refuge with an inland salt marsh & sand prairie that provides opportunities for wildlife viewing, biking, and hiking. This county of 4,000 residents has relaxed lifestyle, yet life can be as active as you choose for it to be. Leadership, volunteer, and social opportunities exist outside of AmeriCorp service in civic groups such as Young Professionals, IOOF, Chamber of Commerce, in coaching youth activities through recreation commissions, organizations such as 4H and Boy/Girl Scouts, and 22 churches. High school activities are a gathering point for the community and provide opportunity to interact with citizens of all ages throughout the school year. Three community colleges are within 30 to 50 miles, along with retail shopping options. The city of Wichita, with major entertainment venues, is a 90 minute drive.

Member Duties : Primary Duties 1: Research best practices for workspace management and write a policy manual. 2: Do fundraising for renovation. 3: Develop a budget for annual costs. 4: Develop a list of artisans to offer workshops. 5: Plan and promote arts-based community events. 6: Research, plan, and document opportunities to partner with such as the Kansas Humanities Council. 7: Develop a manual of the history of Gray Studio which serves as a script for volunteers who give tours of Gray Photo Studio. 8: Increase awareness of Gray Photo Studio facilities, including the creation of programs that engage citizens in cultural activities. 9: Develop campaign materials directed toward potential donors. 10: Develop a marketing plan for recruiting future participants in the resident artist program. 11: Research possibilities for partnerships with foundations that are consumers of arts. 12: Enhance local business landscape by encouraging owners to update building exteriors and marketing materials.
