2015-2016 Fox Cities Region Community Outreach

Make a difference in Calumet and Outagamie County Communities while gaining valuable experience in areas including human services and education. Enhance your skills in communication, collaboration, critical thinking and organization. Work with various community organizations and government agencies that could potentially open the door to a future career. Portions of Calumet County have recently been experiencing a change in demographics which has resulted in an increased number of low income families and Hispanic families in some school districts. To address this, the AmeriCorps VISTA will work with Calumet County schools and establish sustainable programs for increasing poverty awareness and working with Hispanic populations. A successful VISTA candidate would ideally be bilingual, Spanish speaking. An exploration of after school opportunities for youth in Calumet County and the Appleton Area is needed. The VISTA will develop partnerships with after school programs, determine needs of the programs, and work with UW Extension staff to develop a sustainable plan to meet those needs and evaluate outcomes. Finally, the VISTA will collaborate with agencies, including but not limited to, Goodwill Grows, local food pantries, libraries, FISC, and the UW Extension Family Living and WNEP programs to develop and implement financial literacy and food security programs relevant to their clients. This is a full-time year long position with a monthly living allowance of $973. VISTA's are allowed to have outside employment or enroll as a part time student during their year of service as long as it does not conflict with the requirements and expectations of their VISTA role. Upon successful completion of the year of service, the VISTA is eligible for an education award of $5730. It is the responsibility of the candidate to secure housing during their term. VISTA must have a reliable vehicle.
