Alvernia University - Postsecondary Success - PACC

The Reading Collegiate Scholars Program (RCSP) is a program for high school students offered by Alvernia University in partnership with the Olivet Boys & Girls Club. The RCSP builds on the Franciscan mission of the University to provide a caring, values-based education to deserving students from the local community, especially first or second-generation college students. The program will begin to work with students during their 9th grade year and will follow them through high school graduation with the potential for admission and a full scholarship to Alvernia University. The RCSP will work with students and their families to enhance their success in high school and help families develop a familiarity with higher education that they may not be able to develop otherwise. High school students who are members of Olivet will be enrolled and have regular contact with Alvernia University students who will deliver the program to four different clubs throughout the City of Reading. Programming topics will include study skills, preparing for college while still in high school, vocational interest and academic major discussions, sessions with Admissions counselors and Student Financial Planning staff, as well as preparation for the SATs and ACTs. Visits to local college campuses, including Alvernia’s, will also be a part of the program, giving participants the opportunity to attend classes, talk with professors and current college students, and become comfortable in a college environment. Students who show interest in attending Alvernia and complete program requirements will have the opportunity to compete for up to 20 full scholarships sponsored by donors in the community. Pennsylvania Campus Compact (PACC) is an organization which offers statewide support for member institutions who sustain an environment, culture, and infrastructure for student civic and community engagement and campus/community partnerships.
