AK Native Tribal Health Consortium -Healthy Homes -Anchorage

Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium is a statewide non-profit owned and operated by Alaska Native People that provides health services to an estimated 140,000 Alaska Native People. Services include specialty medical care, community health services, construction and maintenance of water and sanitation facilities, training and educational support, and other services including environmental health. The VISTA will be working with a healthy homes and respiratory health project that focuses on housing improvements. The goal is to oversee a community-wide healthy homes program, led by a Tribe in a remote part of Alaska, to improve respiratory health of residents and reduce the incidence of disease through home-based interventions that include home improvements provided by the regional housing authority, and in home education provided by ANTHC. The project focuses on a remote community where Alaska Native People have identified healthy homes, indoor air quality, and respiratory illness as high priority concerns. Deteriorating housing stock, home overcrowding, and lack of access to in-home piped water and sewer are some of the causative factors that have been identified for the prevalence of respiratory disease. The VISTA will work with community stakeholders including tribal governments, health care providers, housing authorities, environmental workers and residents to decrease the incidences of respiratory disease through increased education, partnership development, and bundling of services between organizations. The VISTA will build off their VISTA predecessor’s work to create and pilot education materials. The program has won awards from HUD’s Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes, as well as won the EPA’s National Clean Air Excellence Award for Visionary Program. BENEFITS: Monthly stipend $1,333, relocation up to $1000 and settling in allowance $550 for relocating members, health benefits, childcare assistance, and Ed Award $5,815 or cash stipend.

Member Duties : The service year will focus on providing education materials, training the trainers within the community, and helping lead a coalition of stakeholders in a remote community that is committed to improving indoor air quality in Tribal homes. The VISTA will work with ANTHC staff and community stakeholders to implement the project, analyze success, develop improved systems for delivery of community and stakeholder education and present on their findings. The VISTA will periodically travel to participant communities to gain familiarity with the home health issues facing Rural Alaskans, and meet community stakeholders. The VISTA will then use data analysis to identify home interventions that improved the respiratory health of residents. Using proven interventions, the VISTA will focus on creating (or building from existing) a targeted educational curricula for a pilot dissemination to community environmental workers, health officials and other community health stakeholders.
