2015-16 MultiCultural Outreach Program - Southwest WI

The MultiCultural Outreach Program (MCOP) VISTA needs to be eager to make a difference in efforts to expand awareness and access to resources for the growing multicultural population in southwest Wisconsin! With more farms and small businesses hiring Hispanics and other new immigrants, our community created MCOP to be the “first-of-its kind in our rural area” resource, referral and assistance program for new immigrants and their families. The VISTA, who must be fluent in Spanish, will build partnerships and work with local agencies, schools, medical providers, and employers plus motivated staff, volunteers, and the immigrants. Collectively, they will identify and address current and emerging immigrant needs. Specific content areas for this VISTA assignment will include financial literacy, capacity building, and access to food. The VISTA may also be part of the MCOP’s volunteer-driven English as a Second Language (ESL) program. The VISTA will work in 4-5 southwest Wisconsin counties where we treasure our four distinct seasons with beautiful rolling hills covered with woodlands and crops and scattered with cattle. For the outdoor enthusiast, we are proud of our state and county parks and miles of local trails, rivers, and lakes for hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, skiing, camping, and wildlife watching. Cultural opportunities abound with local artists, live theater, local music, community events, and a variety of local food products and farmers markets. Significant historical sites include Pendarvis in Mineral Point, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin in Spring Green, First Capitol at Belmont, and Stonefield in Cassville. In addition, we are within an hour from all the attractions of Madison. The MCOP VISTA project office will be headquartered in Dodgeville/Iowa County with frequent travel to other communities in neighboring counties. Dodgeville is located on Hwy. 151 & 23 with quick access to Madison & Platteville, WI and Dubuque, Iowa.
