2015-16 Upham Woods Healthy Futures VISTA
 
 
 
Work with organizations within the surrounding communities to assist them in building capacity to utilize resources provided by Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center to enhance learning for youth and families in poverty. Recruit and train volunteers to teach positive youth development programs at local schools and community centers. Educate community leaders, school staff, and administrators on the benefits of incorporating programs that specifically target youth with risk factors associated with poverty. Develop materials, partnerships and programmatic structure to sustain yearly free community programs. Research, identify, and solicit funding sources to allow Upham Woods to offer multiple, ongoing opportunities to families living in poverty. Programs will be within a school and also out-of-school time setting. Work as part of a team to build relationships that enable resources at Upham Woods to be used in communities to address the needs associated with families living in poverty.

Member Duties : Upham Woods is located on the lovely Wisconsin River within the Wisconsin Dells community at the intersection of Juneau & Columbia Counties. Over 12% of this population lives in poverty. The targeted communities include the Wisconsin Dells school district (46-61% free/reduced lunches), Ho Chunk Head Start youth, & Mauston School District (45 - 63% free/reduced lunches). Surrounding communities have similar demographics. VISTA member will work to extend positive youth development opportunities to these communities. Specifically the AmeriCorps member will work to promote characteristics & provide educational resources that lead to healthier financial futures. This will be accomplished through improved food & energy literacy, natural resources education, & educating about healthy living choices. Educational strategies will be multifaceted & experiential. In addition to rewarding service this location offers amazing outdoor recreation with paddling, state parks, hiking, etc. nearby.
