*2014 Jackson Co Summer 4-H Out of School Outreach

Mission: AmeriCorps*VISTA in Jackson County will, with community partners and adult volunteers, engage youth in creative, research-based youth development programs designed to develop skills that support improved academic performance, healthy lifestyle choices, and life transitions to college and the workforce. Audience served: Elementary school age youth and teen leaders in Jackson County, Wisconsin. This rural county in western Wisconsin has a total population of 20,449 with an overall poverty rate of 16.4%. Children are disproportionately affected by this with over 50% of youth participating in the free or reduced lunch program. Native Americans make up 6.2% of the county’s overall population. Program highlights: During the summer, the AmeriCorps VISTA will bring 4-H Afterschool to the Boys & Girls Club of Jackson County (BGCJC). The individual will work closely with the BGCJC, leading hands-on 4-H programming, emphasizing science, technology, engineering, and math with the youth, ages 8-18. Outreach to socially, economically, and ethnically diverse youth in the BGCJC will engage youth in additional 4-H community programs like summer camp, fair, and educational clinics.
