The VISTA will be charged with designing, implementing and coordinating civic engagement activities in Opa-locka in collaboration with student clubs, service-learning courses, and other campus changemaking programs. The VISTA will promote community development through an intensive place-based focus on civic engagement and service in Opa-locka using best practices in community development and providing sustainable, measurable impact for our closest community. The CoLab at MDC North will use cooperative learning principles to actively develop community assets in an environment of learning, community, innovation, and engagement under the auspices of MDC’s Institute for Civic Engagement & Democracy, the IDEA Center and the Earth Ethics Institute.

Member Duties : Community-based Research & Civic and Social Action Projects Screenings, Presentations, Discussion Circles & Lectures Performances, Workshops, Pitching Competitions, Service Programs, & Showcases The VISTA will initiate partnerships between community and campus, run pilot engagement projects and programs directly connecting students to community development efforts, and identify resources to enhance student and community capacity for changemaking. They will engage key stakeholders, such as students, faculty, campus administration, nonprofit partners, and community members to identify specific goals, strategies and desired outcomes for partnerships, and pilot initial implementation, and develop communication strategies to promote sustianable solutions to combat poverty in the Opa-locaka community.
