Since 1964, UCC has been the designated Community Action Agency (CAA) for the City of Newark. CAAs are local non-profit organizations, supported by federal Community Services Block Grant funding that carries out the Community Action Program, which was founded by the 1964 Economic Opportunity Act to fight poverty by empowering the poor as part of the War on Poverty. Over 5,000 people have benefited from our numerous programs that include affordable housing, shelter for the homeless, pantries for the hungry, and activities for the elderly, young adults and children.
