ABLE Member at Big Brother Big Sister Cattaraugus County

AmeriCorps Builds Lives through Education (ABLE), a program of The Service Collaborative, mobilizes individuals in national service to revive and strengthen educational environments, expanding opportunities for today's youth and transforming America's future – one student, one classroom, and one community at a time. While members are serving the students, they are growing their own skill sets through hands-on experience, professional development opportunities, and mentorship from teachers and staff. ABLE partners with various schools and educational programs and members are selected to serve at a specific site based on their skill set and the need of the site. ABLE members serving at Big Brother Big Sister will manage the mentor matches of elementary/intermediate students (Littles) to high school students (Bigs) at designated schools. With their case load of matches, members will implement the Positive Action, a social-emotional intervention. They will work closely with Big Brother Big Sister staff and school leaders to ensure the success of the mentor matches. Responsibilities and duties of AmeriCorps ABLE members: • Members commit to 50 weeks of full-time (40hrs/week) service • Work with students who have been identified by the partner site as needing additional support in math and/or social-emotional life skills • Participate in monthly ABLE professional development on topics that focus on building members’ skill sets • Plan lessons using the evidence-base curriculum, Positive Action • Work with educational leaders to strategize and implement best ways to serve students at selected schools
