Activists for Educational Justice

Consider the thousands of high school students in the U.S. who excel academically. To instill our best students with civic-mindedness, we often have them volunteer or fundraise for a worthy cause. But what that typically means is that our brightest students - those who have developed a proven expertise in academics - are then directed to sell cookies, wash cars, or recycle trash. This may seem like a mere blunder from a human resources perspective, but at Educational Justice, we believe that it virtually amounts to gross negligence in light of the crisis raging in American education: the income achievement gap is staggering (nearly twice that of the black-white gap) and over 25 million students live in poverty unable to afford the outside help that students from high-income families regularly enjoy. Educational Justice is an award-winning nonprofit startup that is tackling the educational inequity ravaging our communities by tapping into an existing resource: we leverage the power of everyday technology to harness and direct the efforts of exceptional high school students, allowing them to pass on their knowledge and skills by tutoring younger peers preparing to enter high school. The Educational Justice Activists program invites high school students to apply to a new kind of honor society. Applicants are selected based on academic credentials and, if accepted, become activists for educational equity. These students, called EJ Activists, then create a profile via the EJ web application. Supervisors in local middle schools and community centers identify low-income students (EJ Achievers) needing academic support. Each EJ Achiever enrolled is able to browse through the database of Activist profiles to select one to be his/her dedicated tutor for hour-long sessions every week for up to two years. The initiative recently won a social entrepreneurship conference at Harvard University. To learn more, visit http://educationaljustice.org/EJA
