Alaska Service Corps- Assistant Youth Crew Leader
 
 
 
The Alaska Service Corps (ASC) empowers individuals to foster personal and professional growth, through hands-on learning in Alaska. ASC is a statewide non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization with field offices in Juneau and Indian. The ASC summer youth program selects Alaskan Youth aged 17-20 years old to complete conservation projects, recreational development projects and safety improvements on public lands throughout the state. ASC programs encourage environmental stewardship as well as promote professional development and personal growth opportunities to its members. Members camp during their entire service in both front and backcountry settings. ASC Assistant Youth Crew Leaders play a pivotal multi-faceted role in the success of both projects and the professional development of the young people (17-20 yrs. old) they co lead. Working closely with the Crew Leader this person assists in many aspects of projects and Spike life while taking the lead when needed. This demanding role provides excellent opportunities to develop, hone, and teach skills both on the technical and leadership side. This position is an excellent opportunity for those with Conservation Corps experience looking to gain leadership skills. Successful candidates will demonstrate sound judgment, have compassion, and maintain high standards of themselves and others. Due to the nature of the position a devotion to beyond one’s self is required.

Member Duties : Maintain a safe work and camp location. Mentor Crew Members and work closely with Crew Leader. Provide 24 hour coverage of crew (weekends included). Understand, uphold, and enforce ASC Risk Management procedures. Communicate professionally with members, Corps Staff, and Project Sponsors. On the ground Project Management and implementation. Transport crew and equipment in ASC 12 passenger vans. Manage and reconcile petty cash and credit cards for crew purchases. Develop, coordinate, and deliver member development opportunities. Complete documentation including timesheets, expense reports, and incident reports. Proper use and maintenance of power and hand tools. Ability to perform strenuous work; lift and carry up to fifty pounds, be able to hike 5 miles in various terrain.
