AltaMed AmeriCorps Program
 
 
 
The AltaMed AmeriCorps program places AmeriCorps members to focus on increasing health education, prevention of illness, access to healthcare, and awareness to health and STEM careers for the underserved communities of Los Angeles and Orange County. Over the course of 12 months, 20 full-time members will be trained and placed across Los Angeles and Orange County to provide services to patients/clients. AmeriCorps members will conduct outreach, enroll beneficiaries into healthcare insurance, conduct health education and illness prevention workshops, as well as educate youth on how to prepare for different types of careers in healthcare and STEM. The mission of the AltaMed AmeriCorps program is to train and place AmeriCorps Members into schools, clinics and hospitals to increase the number of medically underserved individuals having access to primary care and health education. AltaMed’s vision is to develop a national service health pipeline for careers in community health centers that improve access to healthcare for the underserved.

Member Duties : The AltaMed program places AmeriCorps members to focus on one of the following performance measures: STEM, Health Education, or Access to Healthcare. STEM- Members will serve directly with high school and college students, parents, and school administration to coordinate and deliver workshops, career awareness events, college trips, and professional panels. Health Education- Members will serve directly with clinic administrators, health educators, students, and parents to deliver workshops and wellness programming. Access to Healthcare- Members will serve directly with providers, certified enrollment counselors, patient care coordinators, students, and families to deliver workshops around health insurance benefits and increase knowledge on health insurance, health benefits, and preventative services.
