This is an AmeriCorps VISTA Assignment supported through the Corporation for National and Community Service (please see www.nationalservice.org - click on AmeriCorps for pertinent information about becoming a VISTA). This assignment will create protocol to launch the S.M.O.O.T.H. (Strong Men Overcoming obstacles Through Hard Work) College Access Mentoring Program. The all male program will address the problem of poor academic performance, poor reading skills, and poor self-image that directly impacts academic success, on time promotion, timely graduation and entry into a post-secondary education program for middle school at-risk boys in grades 6-8. The VISTA assigned to this program will develop a recruitment plan to identify at risk boys from the target schools as well as develop a plan to recruit potential Tennessee State University (TSU) students to become college partner mentors; develop materials for workshops and seminars for TSU students and middle school students; participate in creating a system to obtain data to track student success from target schools; and develop a system to create an evaluation tool to measure program success.
