Science Education and Economic Development (Sitka)

With the North Pacific in our front yard and the Tongass National Forest in our backyard, Sitka is an Alaskan island community that makes for an ideal outdoor classroom. The AmeriCorps VISTA at the Sitka Sound Science Center will focus on capacity building, logistical support, and long term economic development. This VISTA position is comprised of three goals, each of which must be supported through a series of projects, initiatives and innovations generated by the acting volunteer. This position is diverse, communications oriented, and requires strong public speaking, organization, coordination and attention to detail. The ideal VISTA candidate should have experience in, or an understanding of, higher education, experiential learning and critical pedagogies. The ideal VISTA candidate should be able to effectively problem solve and maintain lines of communication with Science Center partners both in and outside of the community. This position is ideal for those interested in careers related to science communications, higher education, marketing, and educational development. Benefits include: Monthly living allowance ($1222), relocation costs ($0.34/mile up to $1000) and settling in allowance ($550) for candidates moving 50+ miles, health benefits, child care assistance, training, & an Education Award ($5,775). & @ $ % -

Member Duties : We're looking for someone with a passion for capacity building, logistical support, and long term economic development, and community engagement. The ideal candidate must be a strong public speaker, work well in a team and be willing to be outgoing. VISTA activities include developing field courses with other universities and colleges, establishing partnerships between other research entities interested in developing field courses in Sitka, and building new programs that promote the Science Center and science educational and career pathways to rural Alaskan students locally and statewide. Goal 1: Economic Development - develop new programs to bring college level field courses to Sitka that will seed new research and education programs to further the economic development of our rural, coastal community. Goal 2: Develop other earned revenue sources for the Science Center Goal 3: Evaluate current community programs and analyze the success and progress.
