The Franklinton Food-Health-Wellness Corps is a 10-member, neighborhood-based, AmeriCorps VISTA project that builds community-food-system capacity with community organizations that serve in Columbus, Ohio's west-side neighborhood of Franklinton. Franklinton is one of Columbus' most underserved communities, and many residents are adversely impacted by various economic, environmental, and social issues. Approximately 15% of residents are unemployed, 66% of households live at or below the poverty line, and more than 50% of residents experience some level of food insecurity. The VISTA program will involve VISTA members working with a wide range of social service agencies throughout Franklinton to help build the capacity of food-health-wellness initiatives throughout the Franklinton neighborhood. Service sites include an urban farm, a hospital affiliated health and wellness center, a family housing stabilization agency, an Episcopal faith community, and a community bicycle shop. This VISTA member will serve at Franklinton Cycleworks (FCW) - a non-profit bicycle shop. FCW is committed to helping people overcome transportation barriers, be more physically active, and connect with others in a supportive community. Many community residents rely on bicycles for their everyday transportation but lack the resources necessary for proper maintenance. Through FCW’s programs, community residents are provided opportunities to learn bike maintenance and repair and utilize professional grade stands and tools to keep their bikes in top form. Residents are also given the opportunity to volunteer in the shop and earn shop credit which can be used to purchase bikes, parts, and accessories. FCW has formed partnerships with Columbus Public Health, Mount Carmel Health System, and many other Franklinton based organizations to interrupt the cycle of poverty. Together we’re building more than bikes; we’re building healthy individuals and families, opportunities, and a vibrant neighborhood.
