VISTA Summer Associates - Lincoln Elementary

The HandsOn Central California VISTA Summer Associate project focuses on ensuring that by the time students reach the 3rd grade, they will be proficient in reading, in order to be academically successful through graduation. Research shows that proficiency in reading by the end of third grade enables students to shift from learning to read to reading to learn, and to master the more complex subject matter they encounter in the fourth grade curriculum. Most students who fail to reach this critical milestone falter in the later grades, often drop out before earning a high school diploma, and struggle for the rest of their lives. The following issues contribute to students not reaching proficiency levels prior to the end of third grade: • English Language Learner • Need Free and reduced lunch • Homeless and Foster children • Lack of routine in home learning activities • History of health related issues Although schools must be accountable for helping all children achieve by providing effective teaching in every classroom, every day, schools cannot succeed alone. Engaging and mobilizing volunteers to remove barriers, expand opportunities, and assist parents and teachers in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities to serve as full partners in the success of their children, is necessary to assure student success. The VISTA Summer Associate will provide individual and small group tutoring to students in a classroom. Assist students in improving academic achievement by meeting with them on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and work on study skills. Other assistance might include: reviewing class material, discussing the text, predicting test questions, formulating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems.
