Bridge to Prosperity: Refugee Youth Mentoring Program

The Bridge to Prosperity: Refugee Youth Mentoring program seeks to pair AmeriCorps Youth Specialists with compatible refugee mentees that are 11-19 years old to provide weekly social, emotional, academic, cultural support and case management as needed. Members will refer the mentee’s family on to ICRI case management services if the Member identifies a serious need and the family is not already assigned to an ICRI case manager. The program collaborates with partners to implement community mentorship and evaluate the effectiveness of it in improving outcomes such as: substance abuse, trauma symptoms, callous-unemotional traits, mental health struggles, and academic performance. The program aims to create impactful relationships between the Youth Specialists and refugee youth to help the refugee youth successfully adjust to life in the United States and prevent engagement with the justice system. The program recognizes the unique barriers that refugee youth face as they acculturate to life in the United States especially as it relates to education and economic opportunity- two focus areas of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). The Program will include six, three-quarter time Members and be overseen by the ICRI AmeriCorps Program Director and the ICRI Executive Director.

Member Duties : • Participate in pre-service and ongoing training sessions throughout the year • Meet weekly with 10+ youth for an average of 2 hours each and provide cultural, academic, emotional, goal planning and social support (after being cleared by the National Service Criminal History Check) • Plan activities to do with the youth such as scheduling phone calls, meetings in a public park, trips to the zoo, meetings at the public library, etc. • Administer Juvenile Justice Institute assessments with the youth every three months • Complete mentor experience survey every three months • Collaborate professionally and effectively with ICRI program staff such as case managers • Update paper and electronic records daily • Respond professionally as appropriately to the developing Covid-19 pandemic as well as disaster response duties as applicable • Participate in National Service days
