2016-2017 Idaho Office for Refugees VISTA, Boise, Idaho

Many of refugees' needs are met by current programming, especially in the first months after arrival, but there is always more that we can do to improve services to refugees, lessen the persistent poverty that refugee families often experience, and improve integration into the local community and accessibility of existing services. Refugees arrive in Idaho from many areas of the world, forced to flee their native lands because of persecution on account of their beliefs, opinions, or ethnic heritage. Once newly arrived refugees are resettled, the Idaho Office for Refugees (IOR) provides assistance and services designed to help these new Americans become integrated into their communities as productive, contributing members of society. The VISTA project will support two programs at IOR: the Refugee Speakers Bureau and Neighbors United. The Idaho Office for Refugees receives many requests for refugees to speak in the community. It is a challenge to find people who are willing and able to share their stories. Building on the new Refugee Speakers Bureau will provide education for the public while providing refugees with useful training in public speaking and English language usage. VISTA will also support the "Neighbors United" program, a collaborative initiative to help refugees successfully integrate and thrive in Boise. Neighbors United was created by the Idaho Office for Refugees and the City of Boise and is supported by over 100 community organization leaders. It focuses on six pillars: transportation, education, housing, employment, health and social integration.
