*PRC Adolescent Sexual Health Initiative – MT DPHHS

The teen birth rate in Montana has failed to drop as rapidly as national rates. DPHHS’ Women’s and Men’s Health Section (WMHS) has identified high-need counties with high teen birth rates using data from the Office of Vital Statistics and the Montana Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Within the top 10 highest teen birth rate counties include six counties that have American Indian reservations. 7 of the top 10 highest teen birth rate counties also have high rates of population below the poverty level. The VISTA will develop an informative mini-grant application and evaluation process that will provide funding to enhance local primary prevention education efforts. Located in beautiful Helena, Montana’s state capital and the “Queen City of the Rockies,” the VISTA serving with Area IV Agency on Aging will have easy access to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, an expansive trail system, and endless opportunities to explore the outdoors through hiking, biking, fishing, and skiing in the heart of Big Sky Country!

Member Duties : The VISTA will work with Teen Pregnancy Prevention and Adolescent Sexual Health Unit staff to develop an informative mini-grant application and evaluation process. The VISTA will then recruit at least 15 community prevention specialists to apply for the mini-grant funds. The VISTA will coordinate monthly calls, provide technical assistance, and training to the mini-grant sites as well as developing a tool kit for conducting community needs assessment to each grant recipient. After the mini-grants have been awarded, the VISTA will monitor the success of the program and work with staff and community partners to apply for funding opportunities to ensure the sustainability of the project.
