* PRC – Montana Afterschool Alliance

Montana’s graduation rates are on the rise. Unfortunately, information also shows that students living in poverty are falling behind with only 76% of low-income students in Montana graduating with a high school degree. Studies have shown that quality afterschool programming is a critical element in closing the achievement gap for vulnerable, low-income students. A 2015 statewide needs assessment conducted by MTAA in partnership with the Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services (DPHHS) revealed that participation in afterschool programs is a low 13% for students in Montana compared to 23% of children who participate nationwide. In Montana, the reality is that not enough students are benefiting from afterschool programming, with the greatest barriers to participation being lack of accessible programs, and the inability to afford the programs that do exist. Livingston, MT offers easy access to Yellowstone National Park, beautiful natural landscapes, and spectacular outdoor recreational opportunities – experience the best of Big Sky Country while helping support youth programs across Montana!

Member Duties : The VISTA will develop partnerships in local and state programs to support afterschool programming for low income students across the state. The VISTA will research and contact current afterschool programs across the State, focusing on the type of program, the reach of the program’s area, and the program’s effectiveness. The VISTA will develop a database of Montana’s afterschool programs, including data on opioid and substance abuse programs currently active in the state. The VISTA will develop a communications plan and tools to better connect low income communities with high quality afterschool programs. The VISTA will identify and connect current afterschool programs within the communities in their service area. The VISTA will determine what barriers low-income students face in participating in afterschool programs, and offer suggestions to program staff on how to remove those barriers.
