WSU VISTA - GLSEN GSA and Volunteer Coordinator

GLSEN Kansas is a local chapter (based in Wichita, founded June 2014) of a national nonprofit. Our mission is to ensure that EVERY student feels safe, valued, and respected in K-12 schools regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression. Our all-volunteer chapter is respected as an educational organization in Kansas working with schools to ensure that LGBTQ students can thrive. Our work focuses on: student support and empowerment, education and support for educators, and championing LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum and policies. The VISTA member will help us build capacity by developing an infrastructure for volunteer management and for supporting Kansas GSAs (Gender and Sexuality Alliances - student-led clubs in schools). Work will include inputting and managing contacts into a database and Google Spreadsheet, identifying best methods of communication with volunteers and GSAs, creating systems for effective communication, contacting volunteers and GSAs (students and sponsors), mailing support resources to GSAs, developing trainings and presentations, and more. The VISTA will be based at our downtown Wichita office. Schedule will include visiting schools, tabling at events, participating in coalition meetings, and participating in other events related to the role. There will be occasional required evening and weekend meetings/events. There may be some opportunities for travel outside of Wichita. We are seeking someone with excellent communication skills who is also proficient with technology. Our Chapter Director will provide supervision. GLSEN is looking for a VISTA member with an excellent work ethic and someone self-motivated, resourceful, and able to stay on task without constant direct supervision. Benefits of joining our organization include knowing that you’re making a difference for LGBTQ youth and helping our Kansas climate become more inclusive for LGBTQ folks!
