BGC of Middlesex County Mentoring Program Coordinator VISTA

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Middlesex County (BGCMC) provides education, prevention and recreation programs after-school for more than 1,500 underserved and at-risk youth in Medford, Cambridge, Somerville and Everett. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of youth with a focus on three outcomes; Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles and Good Character & Citizenship. The Club is not a traditional fee-based or voucher-based program, and is able to serve the families that need these services the most. Youth attend BGCMC Clubs for no more than $30 in membership dues per year. Families rely on the Club to play a significant role in the academic development, goal setting, skill building and concept reinforcement in their children. A key way that BGCMC seeks to engage youth in Club programs and support their overall education and development is through one to one mentoring relationships with caring adult mentors. A VISTA Mentoring Program Coordinator will focus on research, capacity building, promotion, and recruitment of mentors. The VISTA role will expand and enhance current mentor initiatives, engage more volunteer mentors and help increase the quality and outcomes of the mentoring program. The VISTA member will be a member of the Boston Cares AmeriCorps VISTA Cohort of approximately 20 VISTA members serving at more than 10 Greater Boston host sites. Pre-Service Orientation (PSO) for this position will be held August 4-7 in the Boston area. To complete your application, send a resume, cover letter, and a brief writing sample responding to the below questions to VISTA@bostoncares.org. Questions: 1) Why are you interested in doing a year of service and why are you interested in this particular VISTA position? 2) Tell us about a time in the United States’ history that community service made a significant impact bringing about change.
