East Side Learning Center – Communications VISTA (MLC)

East Side Learning Center (ESLC) is a non-profit on the east side of St. Paul working to unlock each child's potential through the foundation of reading. ESLC provides free one-on-one reading tutoring for 300 children, K-3, in 5 elementary schools. Students enjoy individualized lesson plans with a caring adult Monday through Thursday for 30-45 minutes during or after school. Tutoring is during the school year and in the summer. The East Side of St. Paul is a highly diverse community and is also economically depressed. Ninety five percent of our children are on free or reduced price meal plans, meaning their families are at or below the poverty line. More than 90% of the children are from a non-white background and more than 60% are English Learners. Socio-economic status is an indicator of a child’s opportunity to do well in school. One-third of St. Paul students pass 3rd grade standardized reading tests putting them at four times higher risk of dropping out of school. At one of our sites, less than 20% of students read at grade level. The achievement gap is impacting many children on St. Paul's East Side. However, as a result of ESLC’s programming, more than 80% of children reach their DRA level reading goals. ESLC supports English Learning and provides racial equity via literacy tutoring embedded in the schools, after school and summer reading camps. These children will also be served by our VISTA project and subsequent program expansion. The VISTA will focus on areas in which we have limited capacity to raise awareness of our mission and grow our database of volunteers and supporters. The current database is less than 1,000 individuals. At present, we manage communications with an average of five hours per week. The VISTA will enable us to expand our weekly outreach by developing efficient, sustainable communications processes.

Member Duties : The ESLC Communications VISTA will develop and pilot a 3-year plan for communications to expand our relationships with volunteers, donors, community partners and families. The VISTA will focus on our Board's diversity goals to strategically enhance the cultural relevancy of our community outreach plan. The VISTA's work to improve communications will also include a plan and pilot program to improve the substitute tutor process.
