PRC- CASA Launch

CASA typically serves 200 foster children annually, 65 of these are foster teens; currently there are no programs that effectively support foster youth as they transition out of care and into adulthood. Services for both their parents and the children are overwhelmed resulting in extended stays in foster care. Often the children wait 6 months to a year before receiving counseling, often they are placed with new or very inexperienced counselors because that is all that is available. The intended result is to develop a program that empowers foster/adoptive youth through networking, skill building, mentoring and future planning. In order to achieve success the member must create buy-in with DCFS and form partnerships with at least 12 community members and/or agencies to create a viable program. Using an evidence-based curriculum, “Foster Futures”, the member will help form the Launch program, along with calendared monthly meetings and new events including Super Hero Fun Day and Camp Connect. These evidenced practices build specific life skills that will increase their resiliency, employability, and the possibility of pursuing higher education. Through this program, Launch participants will develop a support network that will be available to them as they age out of the foster care system into adulthood. This VISTA will also explore funding opportunities ensuring sustainability beyond the member’s service year. Building these capacities will alleviate the likelihood that participating foster youth will struggle with poverty as adults.

Member Duties : The overall goal is to help foster youth break the cycle of abuse and poverty by providing access to a mentoring and skills building program, leading to a more successful young person and a successful transition into adulthood. To achieve this three new services will be developed, 12 community partnerships will be facilitated, and the member will be responsible for funding development of $2,500. Foster youth and former foster youth will form supports and gain life skills that increase the likelihood of high-school graduation, improve their employability, teach them to manage money and support them toward their higher education goals. Armed with these skills, the foster youth participating in this program are better equipped to escape generational poverty.
