PRC- Children's Trust Fund Tribal Outreach

We believe that Montana’s children are the state’s greatest assets. Today’s children are the leaders of tomorrow. We hold their future in our hands, and our future is in their hands. Poverty is one of the biggest risk factors for child maltreatment, especially neglect. Children who live in families with an annual income less than $15,000 are 22 times more likely to be abused or neglected than children living in families with annual income of $30,000 or more. With prevention education programs, families are more likely to have healthy families, and youth finish school with secure, steady jobs thus interrupting the intergenerational poverty cycle. Child neglect involves knowingly or negligently depriving a child of his/her basic needs: adequate food, clothing, shelter, and/or care. Poverty is defined in similar terms. Stress factors associated with poverty increase parenting difficulties and can affect parents’ abilities to meet their child’s needs, resulting in child maltreatment. Youth that have been abused or neglected are at an increased risk of delinquency, poor school performance, symptoms of mental illness, or pregnancy. With the prevention of child abuse and neglect, families are more likely to have healthy families, and youth finish school with secure, steady jobs thus interrupting the intergenerational poverty cycle.
