*PRC- Montana Food Bank Network

This VISTA project will move rural low income Montana seniors and families out of poverty by providing new access to emergency food resulting in better nutrition. Adequate food access provides not only better nutrition for hungry Montana seniors and families, but also allows for Montanans to succeed in school, work, and other life opportunities. As shown in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, a human first needs food, shelter, and basic needs met so they can thrive in life! Through this project, the VISTA will expand the Mail-a-Meal Program to at least 60 low income households. The VISTA will conduct outreach to find new drop-sites for the program in underserved "gap" counties. Additionally, the VISTA will work to build relationships with new retailers in gap counties to expand the Grocery Rescue Program to new areas. They will educate stores on the benefits of the program in efforts to recruit them. Interested stores will be paired with existing MFBN partner agencies. The VISTA will train both the store and MFBN partner agency on program practices. With the addition of recovered food from the Grocery Rescue Program, MFBN partner agencies will be able to better meet client needs. The food distributed through these programs, as well as number of clients served, will be tracked internally through our inventory and client tracking systems. We will be able to show the expansion of these programs through these tools. Furthermore, over time we will see evidence of the program expansions with a decline in number of gap counties.

Member Duties : The overall goal of the project is to increase food security for low income seniors and families with inadequate access to food. To effectively serve these communities, two new Mail-a-Meal drop-sites will be developed to provide food to at least 60 new low income households, and five new organizations will be on-boarded for the Grocery Rescue Program to support 31 ‘gap’ communities; will be surveyed; seven community volunteers will be recruited and trained to sustain the efforts of the project. Creating the capacity for Montana Food Bank Network to provide food to low income seniors and families will ensure underserved individuals are better able to move out of poverty and sustain healthy futures as they are not forced to choose between food and other necessities.
