* BMVP - Creating Healthy Futures for Veterans

Making what seems impossible, possible. Eliminating veteran suicide. The Adaptive Performance Center (APC) serves many veterans; however, the need to support programming for approximately 7,900 veterans living in Billings is imperative. Veteran suicide is at an all-time high in our nation, and the veteran suicide rate in Montana is significantly higher than the national average. According to America’s Warrior Partnership, post pandemic numbers estimate that the rate may be closer to 44 veteran suicides per day. In a 2019 study by the University of Kentucky, the Center for Suicide Prevention identified that one completed suicide is thought to impact up to 135 people. Innovative programming to address this need is critical. Studies show that a fitness environment encourages service member reintegration through physical activity that eliminates pain, improves cognitive function, provides a sense of purpose, and leads to more social incorporation. The APC supports veterans, military service members and their families by using a unique collaborative and community-based approach to services. This includes physical and mental well-being, social interaction, educational and occupational resources, and other services to assist veterans into a healthy standing. The benefits of eliminating veteran suicide also have far reaching impact. When a veteran chooses life over death, a community is kept intact, and economic stability is attainable. This project will support innovative health care access to veterans and active military service members suffering with anxiety, depression and PTSD which will allow veterans to achieve success in maintaining employment and access to educational opportunities, thus moving them out of poverty.

Member Duties : Serve those who served. Connect veterans in Montana with the support and health services that they need. The overall goal of the project is to foster healthy futures for veterans and active military service members through the promotion of available services and funding that will provide them resources that alleviate poverty and support members living in low-income situations. The VISTA will build capacity and increase effectiveness of the Adaptive Performance Center by leveraging financial resources; raising community awareness of services and programs; improving communications with partners and stakeholders; and developing technology systems that support veterans’ health initiatives.
