Viva Bien, Coma Bien, Siéntase Bien! (VCS!)

The vast majority of Hayward’s young people are not physically fit, and Hayward has the highest prevalence of overweight children in Alameda County’s 14 cities and six unincorporated areas. The Hayward Unified School District’s Viva Bien, Coma Bien, Siéntase Bien (Live Right, Eat Right, Feel Right) AmeriCorps program addresses these issues by engaging young people and their families in life-saving and skill building health-promotion activities in a school-based delivery model with the support of AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps members facilitate daily fitness and nutrition education activities with students after school during the district’s Youth Enrichment Program, plan and implement monthly family workshops, facilitate assessments, and engage in community service events throughout the school year. In addition, members receive extensive professional development, network opportunities, and are prepared to apply for entry-level positions with the Hayward Unified School District upon successful completion of their term of service. AmeriCorps members serve M-F 1-6pm and some mornings, evenings and weekends.
