*PRC – Helena Food Share

Helena Food Share (HFS) was founded in 1987 to help provide emergency food to our neighbors who face hunger. Families come to our pantry because they are facing difficult times and need help while they experience difficulty paying medical bills, struggling with a disability, finding their way through a layoff, or they're simply doing as best they can to make ends meet with a low or fixed income. No matter their situation, we are dedicated to serving them with dignity and respect and providing them with emergency food to help them through. However, the community has a further need that includes education in nutrition and dependable access to sustainable, locally grown foods, which HFS is currently unable to offer. This project will create access to educational opportunities for community members of all ages. There will be space for people to learn gardening techniques specific to the area, assist in the growing of small crops for use in the pantry, and expand their knowledge of how to incorporate healthier items into daily meals. This project will create a healthier community by providing access to nutrition education, gardening knowledge, and more nutritionally valuable foods in the pantry. The overall goal is to move low-income clients out of poverty through nutrition education programs that provide them with the tools necessary to achieve food security.
