PRC- Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council

The Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council (RMTLC) is dedicated to improving health, economic development and education for Tribes and their members through a variety of programs, policy recommendations, and Tribal Leader meetings. The VISTA member will serve as a key collaborator in making strides toward accessible programming to a population often criminalized and underserved. The result will be better health and life outcomes for mothers facing addiction and the children born into at-risk environments, as well as a bolstered community partnership of service providers. As a whole, through this project, the Blackfeet Nation and the Browning community will reap the rewards of empowering these mothers to rise above poverty and addiction and solidify this tradition for future generations.

Member Duties : This VISTA project will alleviate poverty by improving access to health care for low income Native American mothers addicted to opiates. By using a collaborative community approach, the member will build connections to coordinated care inclusive of treatment, medical assistance, informational, educational, health and wellness, life-skills, education and employment and other services. Empowering healthy mothers and improving pregnancy outcomes will ultimately create a pathway out of poverty for the mothers and their babies. In order to achieve success, the member will conduct 5-10 focus groups; organize community screenings; complete a gap analysis; feasibility study on tribal treatment program; work with community partners to develop a referral system; learn from other wrap around programs; apply for funding; business planning; and review evidence based practices.
