Montana has six Mental Health Centers in the state that provide crisis stabilization treatment beds and several hospital facilities have secure beds available. When an individual is requiring crisis stabilization beds prior to involuntary commitment, sheriff and police officers need to call Mental Health Centers and or hospitals to check availability, which is time consuming and not always an option. The State of Montana does not have a means to access data that includes all providers and services that are available for a mental health and/or substance use disorder crisis. There is no consistent way for first responders to identify where in the community to take individuals in crisis. This VISTA project will develop a current up to date database for emergency detention beds that are available statewide. Located in beautiful Helena, Montana’s state capital and the “Queen City of the Rockies,” the VISTA serving with Area IV Agency on Aging will have easy access to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, an expansive trail system, and endless opportunities to explore the outdoors through hiking, biking, fishing, and skiing in the heart of Big Sky Country!

Member Duties : The VISTA will conduct assessments on the Mental Health Centers and hospitals around the state to identify those offering emergency detention beds as well as the mental health and substance use treatments they offer. The VISTA will research current mental health and substance use disorder services, including opioid use, statewide and nationally that provide alternatives to jail placement. They will analyze and formulate strategies from that research that can provide alternatives to jail placement in Montana. The VISTA will then develop a strategic plan for implementing a statewide database that can be accessed by first responders, hospitals and health centers to update what beds are available and where and what treatment services are offered and includes information and strategies on alternatives to jail placement.
