NC AbilityCorps

The AmeriCorps members will support adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities varying from severe and profound to mild/moderate. Most of the individuals served also have physical disabilities and are in specialized wheelchairs or need adaptive equipment to communicate or to support their bodies. These individuals reside at J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center in Morganton, NC and Caswell Developmental Center in Kinston, NC. NC AbilityCorps AmeriCorps members will provide these individuals with direct care, excluding personal care, empower residents to make independent choices in leisure and other activities, assist in planning for outings, interact with local community to develop ways for community volunteers to enhance individuals’ opportunities, and recruit a group or persons to meet the specific needs of the individuals. People with disabilities are often thought about in terms of what they cannot do but we focus on the abilities of the individuals. The extra assistance and interaction is a need that would impact the individual’s quality of life. Both members and residents will benefit from the AmeriCorps program. As a result of our knowledge and guidance the members will have a deeper understanding of working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Members will receive first-hand experiences which will be invaluable as they seek employment opportunities and will provide career job readiness skills. Residents will have more individualized attention, greater opportunities to become independent in choice making, increased leisure activities, and increased community activities. Service hours will be set up to accommodate member educational schedules, allowing the members to gain the educational credentials needed to either enter the workforce directly upon completing their AmeriCorps terms, or continuing academic activities to move into al human service profession.
