*PRC – No Kid Hungry Billings

In Montana, one in five children struggle with hunger. Montana No Kid Hungry is dedicated to putting an end to child hunger by improving food access through increasing participation in school meal programs and raising awareness of this important issue. These efforts ensure that low-income students remain healthy and ready to learn. PRC VISTAs serving with Montana No Kid Hungry partner with the Billings Public School District to develop the food service program’s capacity to increase student access to school breakfast, afterschool meals, summer food service sites, and other community food access programs. The largest city in Montana, Billings is located in Yellowstone County in the south-central portion of the state, where residents have easy access to Yellowstone National Park and a variety of spectacular outdoor recreational activities.

Member Duties : The VISTA will assess the current breakfast meal programs available along with the barriers that exist to alternative breakfast programs in 3 Billings middle schools. The VISTA will use their findings from the assessments to develop a strategic plan for implementing alternative breakfast programs in each of the three middle schools and begin implementing the programs. The VISTA will pilot a meal program that enables the school to provide meals to a larger majority of its student population at no cost to the families. The VISTA will partner with Food Service staff and school staff to create a plan for sustainability once the programs are up and running. The VISTA will assess the current summer meal feeding programs and community supported meal programs, such as the Family Dinner Project, offered in Billings and develop new programs, marketing and outreach to increase access to the summer feeding programs as well as increase participation.
