*PRC- Open Aid Alliance

Montana has been among the top five states for suicide rates in the U.S. for nearly 40 years. Moreover, the Montana Suicide Mortality Review Team (in conjunction with Montana DPHHS) reports Montana as having the highest per-capita rate of suicide of all 50 states in 2014. The current report attributes Montana’s epidemic-proportions suicide rate to a number of factors including: social stigma against depression, access to firearms, alcohol, social isolation, untreated and undiagnosed mental illness, altitude lack of resiliency and coping skills. Among the 2016 Suicide Mortality Review Team Report’s many recommendations is continued support for crisis lines and response teams. Open Aid Alliance is uniquely positioned to reach this underserved and hard-to-reach population including people who inject drugs (PWID). We offer PWIDs a safe place to access harm reduction supplies, ask questions, speak honestly about their drug use and consciously treat people with inherent dignity and respect, Open Aid Alliance has a history for developing trusted, meaningful relationships. Our vision is to create, with the help of a VISTA member, an effective and sensitive crisis and suicide response team for Missoula County.

Member Duties : This VISTA project will move at-risk individuals with co-occurring mental health and addiction out of poverty by creating an effective and sensitive crisis and suicide response team and plan for Missoula County, resulting in a chance to improve social, economic and emotional outcomes. To achieve success, we must hear from community partners, law enforcement, medical providers and those affected by mental health and suicide crisis to establish an appropriate response. The member’s service will strengthen response systems to suicide and mental health crisis and help Open Aid serve vulnerable individuals struggling with addiction, including opioid abuse, and mental health disorders. As a result of the capacity building activities clients will have greater access to mental health and/or addiction treatment services, intensive intervention, follow up care and greater connectedness to their community.
