* PRC – No Kid Hungry in Poplar

In Montana, one in five children struggle with hunger. PRC VISTAs serving with Montana No Kid Hungry are dedicated to putting an end to child hunger by improving food access through increasing participation in school meal programs. These efforts ensure that students remain healthy and ready to learn. PRC VISTAs serving with Montana No Kid Hungry partner with school districts—in this case, the Poplar Public School District—to develop the capacity to increase school breakfast and summer meal programs along with other food access projects. Poplar is situated in the heart of Missouri River Country, with access to pristine landscapes featuring vast plains where elk, deer, pronghorn antelope, and various species of migratory birds abound. Residents of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation have historically suffered from disproportionately high rates of poverty, community leaders are working to guarantee that the children in their communities have consistent access to food. To end child hunger, we need you to serve in Poplar!

Member Duties : The overall goal of this project is to increase food access for low-income students in Poplar and surrounding school districts by expanding school breakfast programs, summer meal programs, afterschool meal programs, and other food access projects. To do this, the VISTA will: conduct an assessment to understand the barriers preventing participation in school meal programs; develop a strategic plan and implement a “Breakfast after the Bell” model in Poplar’s elementary, middle, and high schools; create a strategic plan to increase access to summer meal programs; construct a strategic plan for introducing an after-school meal program, and; implement “The Family Dinner Project” community events to benefit low-income children and their families. To ensure the success and sustainability of the project, the VISTA will work collaboratively with staff, teachers, students, and community partners within the school districts.
