* PRC – No Kid Hungry in Somers-Lakeside/Bigfork

In Montana, one in five children struggle with hunger. PRC VISTAs serving with Montana No Kid Hungry are dedicated to putting an end to child hunger by improving food access through participation in school meal programs. These efforts ensure that students remain healthy and ready to learn. PRC VISTAs serving with Montana No Kid Hungry partner with school districts—in this case, Bigfork and Somers-Lakeside School Districts—to develop the capacity to increase school breakfast and summer meal programs along with other food access projects. Bigfork and Somers-Lakeside, located in the idyllic Flathead Valley, are rural communities that have traditionally relied on blue collar jobs. However, as those jobs have vanished since the 1970s, many families have struggled and their children depend on school meal programs to get by. To end child hunger, we need you to come up to the Flathead Valley to serve in Bigfork and Somers-Lakeside!

Member Duties : The overall goal of this project is to increase food access for low-income students in Bigfork and Somers-Lakeside School Districts by expanding school breakfast programs, summer meal programs, after school meal programs, and other food access projects. To do this, the VISTA will: conduct an assessment to understand the barriers preventing participation in school meal programs; develop a strategic plan and implement a “Breakfast after the Bell” model in Bigfork Middle School and Somers Middle School; create a strategic plan and expand summer meal programs; and construct a strategic plan for introducing an after-school meal program and “The Family Dinner Project.” To ensure the success and sustainability of the project, the VISTA will work collaboratively with staff, teachers, students, and community partners within the school districts.
