Strengthening Students' Literacy & SEL Skills

ChildFund's AmeriCorps program strengthens SEL for students in 22 elementary and middle schools in the LaJoya or Edinburgh School District in TX, with recurring access to vulnerable populations. Members will help plan for, facilitate and document the following activities: 1)Small Group Literacy Circles – Students meet to explore and practice their social emotional learning (SEL) and literacy skills. Circle sessions revolve around culturally relevant, high-interest books focused on targeted SEL themes where students read, discuss stories as a group and participate in fun "connection” activities (art, music, role play, writing, games) that allow them to put their SEL skills into practice. 2)School-wide Literacy Assemblies: Conduct themed-based interactive presentations based on featured books/SEL themes for the entire student body. 3)Family Involvement: Members: a) encourage students to share with and engage their parents in the “connection” projects and; b) facilitate Parent Engagement Night (PEN) activity stations where parents participate with their children in fun SEL activities and receive tips on supporting their children's learning. 4)Lunch Buddies: Members will meet with students during lunch time, reading/discussing featured SEL books. 5)During summer months members work as a team (36) to support summer reading activities to help prevent summer learning loss. Members will assist in: a)Sharing strategies/materials with parents that encourage their child’s reading over the summer. b)Distributing books to students for summer along with accompanying literacy activities to be completed by students. c)Facilitate Community Summer Literacy Festivals that further promote and celebrate summer reading through various fun, family friendly activity stations.
