Groundwork RI Community Engagement VISTA

Groundwork Rhode Island is a non-profit, community-based environmental organization dedicated to making physical improvements in the urban environment that also create economic resources for lower-income people. We achieve this through our many urban stewardship programs, which provide jobs and job training for residents and physically improve our shared urban environment. One of our core programs is Harvest Cycle, a subscriber-based food scrap collection service for homes and small businesses that employs graduates of our adult job training and Green Team high school youth programs. GWRI is also building a community compost site called the West End Compost Hub (WECH) that will serve as a resident drop-off site, compost processing site, and community education center. The VISTA position will support growth of Harvest Cycle, build community support, help us innovate a new model of distributed community composting to reach more community members with composting services, ensure that participation in the program and finished compost product is accessible to low-income residents, strengthen our capacity to provide employment to local residents, and build community and volunteer engagement capacity.
