ACE Univ of TX at Austin Full-Time Early Literacy Tutor

ACE is a high quality, comprehensive, research based, English and Spanish literacy-tutoring program that supports students, families, and the community. ACE’s mission is to provide low-income schools with highly trained AmeriCorps tutors to ensure that children advance to grade level in reading before third grade. The children we work with typically arrive at school without the background and skills that are critical for learning to read, and are likely to fall behind without additional support. 73% of the children who fully participated in the ACE program in 2013-2014 reached and sustained grade-level reading skills by the end of the school year. ACE members tutor one-on-one with kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students identified as needing additional support in reading. Members receive a well-rounded service experience. They are given the opportunity to have a meaningful year of service in Title I schools, commit to civic engagement through community service projects, and the option to participate in professional development activities such as: blog writing, social media, curriculum writing, and recruitment opportunities. Members interested in a career in education are also given the option to serve a second year with ACE and pursue alternative teaching certification through ACE’s partnership with Region 13. Region 13 waives the application and registration fee for second year members along with additional incentives and grants for bilingual members. The ACE Program aims to ensure that half of our cohort is bilingual as many ACE Tutors work with students whose first language is Spanish. Bilingual Tutors conduct lessons in Spanish. Serving as a bilingual tutor requires a proficiency in Spanish and is a great opportunity to advance your language skills. ACE supports bilingual tutors by providing scripted lesson plans.
