Improving Access to Healthcare for Youth with Epilepsy

As New England’s largest safety net hospital, Boston Medical Center (BMC) serves a primarily medically under-served population experiencing high health disparities. The Telehealth Epilepsy Care Collaborative at BMC works to understand, prevent and creatively disrupt barriers to medical care for over 2,500 children and youth with a seizure disorder in Eastern Massachusetts. Along with our team of clinicians, researchers, patient advocates and other AmeriCorps service members, this VISTA will work to expand the capacity and sustainability of our youth mentorship program, which provides support networks and health education for teens with epilepsy. This VISTA will also help build long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with partner mentoring organizations within the BU School of Medicine, the Rhodes Lab Center for Evidence-Based Mentoring, and the Epilepsy Foundation of New England (EFNE). This position is ideal for a candidate who has a passion for improving health care for low-income communities, clinical care, social work, community education, working with children and youth, and/or neuroscience. The VISTA volunteer should be highly motivated, collaborative, proactive, and organized, with excellent interpersonal skills and a desire to work with a wide range of social, racial, and ethnic populations.
