Virginia State Parks AmeriCorps Interpretive Project
Now accepting applications, applicants will be interviewed and selected by Site Supervisors in state parks. AmeriCorps members will serve as park interpreters at state parks across Virginia from April to Sept. 2013. As park interpreters members will be responsible for learning interpretation techniques, gaining an understanding of stewardship ethics and how to help park visitors make connections to natural and cultural resources while following the rules and regulations of AmeriCorps and Virginia State Parks. AmeriCorps members will provide information and programs for park guests. AmeriCorps members will also act as a liaison with the local community. They will communicate with the Friends of parks organizations and work with the parks volunteer coordinator to increase opportunities and participation in our volunteer program. Through the efforts of our AmeriCorps members we will reach more citizens with our conservation message and further our mission to conserve natural, scenic, historic and cultural resources of the commonwealth and to provide recreational and educational opportunities consistent with good stewardship of these lands, water and facilities that leaves them unimpaired for future generations. In exchange for a season of committed service (675 hours) members will receive a $3,850 living allowance, an educational award of 2,114 and valuable training and professional development in the natural resource and public service fields. Living allowance is distributed over each month of participation in the program at $642 per month. Member Duties : AmeriCorps members will work cooperatively with Chief Rangers and Interpretive program managers for scheduling and promoting tours or special environmentally related programs. Members will provide tours/programs alone or with another staff member including guided hikes and in certain locations canoe and/or kayak tours. AmeriCorps member may help develop tours and programs. Members will also assist visitors and give directions to nearby facilities and attractions. AmeriCorps members will perform outreach activities in the community which may include school visits and local festivals and events. AmeriCorps members will work with the park Volunteer Coordinator to recruit and place two new volunteers for the volunteer program. AmeriCorps members will maintain a daily journal of their activities and will record and report their hours to the volunteer coordinator.
