Collaborative LGBTQ+ Center VISTA

This project will build upon and expand the LGBTQ+ Center’s Anti-Racist & Gender-Inclusivity Training project offered during the 2020-2021 academic year. That was a peer-education project that was presented by a team of 5 students to mainly classrooms and other groups who requested it. What we would like to now do is to expand the project further and make it available to more individuals upon request, in addition to our classroom offerings. Our VISTA worker would take the lead in developing the expansion of this Anti-Racist & Gender-Inclusivity training program, which seeks to develop leadership in students who are members of the LGBTQ+ community and/or Black, LatinX, Native, Asian and Pacific Islander, and Middle Eastern/North-African. This project aims at promoting a better understanding of the intersection of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity, with the goal of fostering diversity and inclusive culture in higher education. The VISTA team member will lead conversations about anti-racist and gender-inclusive practices during approximately one-hour trainings covering: History of racism and systemic discrimination, Legacy of civil rights movement to LGBTQ+ rights movement Leadership of Black and Latinx transgender people in LGBTQ+ rights movement Complexity of identity-based on race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity Color-blind racial ideology and white fragility/privilege Critical issues in Black, LatinX, Native, Asian and Pacific Islander, and Middle Eastern/North-African Language and resources to know how to intervene in bias, harassment, and discrimination Through this project, the VISTA member will actively help educate others on the QTPOC (Queer & Trans People of Color) experience, which will benefit this minority group within a minority group, as well as benefitting non-POC by helping them be better allies, co-workers, and community members.
